Study finds one in six pensioners expect to be making mortgage payments

One in six people think they will be over 65 by the time they pay off their mortgage, according to a new study. Among the over 55s, one in four expect to be making mortgage payments over the age of 70 while about one in 10 do not think they will ever repay their mortgages. Hargreaves Lansdown, the firm behind the research, suggest several ways people can help themselves including Equity Release. Sarah Cole, personal finance analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said: “Sixty-five is the new 50, but not in a good way.”
