Unlocking the power of APIs: How greater connectivity can transform the equity release market

Connectivity is fast becoming a critical enabler of better outcomes in the equity release market. Here, Warren Bleechmore examines the role APIs can play in reducing friction, improving efficiency and supporting more proactive advice. He also reflects on the practical considerations the industry must address to make this vision a reality.

In an industry where the customer journey can span decades, connectivity matters — not just between people, but between platforms. The equity release market is no exception. As products become more complex and expectations around service and compliance continue to rise, the case for greater integration across the mortgage ecosystem has never been clearer.

This is where APIs — application programming interfaces — can play a key role.

At their core, APIs allow different systems to talk to one another, enabling real-time data flow and reducing the need for rekeying or manual interventions. In practice, this could dramatically streamline key processes in the equity release lifecycle, from advice through to application and servicing.

The opportunity: Seamless data sharing, smarter journeys

APIs could be used to better connect brokers’ CRM systems with sourcing platforms, lender portals, and even servicing platforms. For example, brokers could benefit from real-time case status updates once an application is submitted to the lender, removing the need for follow-up calls and giving customers faster, clearer communication.

There’s also huge potential to push meaningful insights back to brokers from servicing systems. If a customer has a change in circumstance – such as entering long-term care or requesting further borrowing – this information could trigger a notification in the broker’s CRM, prompting timely engagement and ensuring ongoing suitability of advice.

These types of integrations could also eliminate repetitive admin. Brokers would no longer need to input the same data multiple times across disconnected platforms or manually move documents between systems. That means faster processing, fewer errors, and better outcomes for clients.

Making it happen: Collaboration and considerations

While the benefits are clear, several industry-wide challenges need to be addressed:

Data standards: With lenders capturing data in different formats, there’s a need for consistent frameworks to enable reliable API communication.

Prioritisation: Industry stakeholders must align on which integrations will deliver the greatest benefit to brokers and customers — and focus investment there first.

Cost vs benefit: API development and integration requires upfront investment. Demonstrating the long-term efficiency and service gains will be key to driving adoption.

Legacy systems: Some lenders face significant technical hurdles, particularly if their systems weren’t built to expose or share data externally.

Data sharing concerns: GDPR and data privacy considerations must be carefully navigated — but this shouldn’t prevent progress where secure, consent-based sharing is possible.

A shared vision for the future

The future of the equity release market lies in a more connected, collaborative ecosystem — where brokers, lenders, sourcing platforms and servicers can work seamlessly together to deliver faster, more transparent, and more supportive experiences for customers. APIs are the technology that can enable that vision, but industry alignment and open dialogue will be essential to making it a reality.

Done well, greater connectivity will reduce friction, improve operational efficiency, and ultimately empower brokers to provide better, more proactive advice to their clients. The result? A stronger, more responsive equity release market — all built around the customer.
